Woman Struck By Car In Jersey City Remains In Critical Condition

A DeKalb woman remains in critical condition at Jersey City Medical Center after being struck by a pickup truck on Tuesday night.

The woman, 25, suffered head trauma and other internal injuries when she was hit by the truck at the intersection of Kennedy Boulevard and Newark Avenue. She was stabilized in the ER and moved to the ICU, officials said.

The driver told police made the turn on a green light, but did not see the woman, nor did he realize he struck her. After hearing someone screaming at him, he stopped.

The driver fled the scene after several people assaulted him when he exited the vehicle. He stopped moments later and notified the police of the accident. He has not been charged.

7 Year-Old Dies in One Car Accident

A seven year-old girl died after a car crash that occurred on Monday, February 18 at around 12:30 P.M. The crash took place on the New Jersey Turnpike and injured the girl's mother and sister.

Marianne Duffy, 38, of Chevy Chase, Md., was southbound on the highway in Mercer County, near Exit 8 in East Windsor, when she lost control of her car around 12:30 p.m. Monday, said state police Sgt. Stephen Jones.

The BMW drove off the side of the road and veered inside the guardrail, and eventually went up a bridge embankment and hit the underside support beams of the bridge overpass.

The daughter, Caroline Duffy, was pronounced dead at the scene. Marianne Duffy incurred life-threatening injuries and was taken to Capital Health System's Fuld Hospital. Duffy's other daughter, 4-year-old Claire, had some minor injuries but was okay.

Drunk Girlfriend Ran Over, and Killed Boyfriend

On Saturday night, a man trying to stop his girlfriend from drinking and driving ended up being dragged under the girlfriend's car and died.

Jesenia Vega was leaving a block party to drive home, when her boyfriend, Louis Wiederer, tried to stop her. According to a witness he told her,"You're going to get arrested, you can't drive like that." Wiederer was hanging onto the open side window of Vega's car when she took off, dragging him until he could not hold on, and he fell under the car which ran him over. The car then went through two stop signs before coming to a stop.

Another witness, Jay Steiner, said he heard Vega say, "Oh, my God... Don't tell me I just killed my fiance." after she exited the car and assessed the seen.

Wiederer was pronounced dead on the scene, and Vega was immediately arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated. She has pleaded not guilty and her bail is $100,000 cash or $200,000 bond.

School Bus Crashes a Danger to Children

ABC News reports that 51,000 children required emergency medical attention for non-fatal school bus-related injuries and accidents over a three-year period. This is unacceptable and we need to make sure that these shool buses, from New Jersey to Florida to California are equipped with seat belts and trained and careful divers.

Family Seeks Justice in Fatal Turnpike Truck Wreck

According to the Wichita Eagle, the four surviving children of a Wisconsin woman who was killed last year in an accident on the Kansas Turnpike have sued three trucking companies responsible for the crash.

Relatives of Corrine Bartels, 64, of Platteville, Wis., sued the owner of the cab, the owner of the trailer it was hauling and the trucking company the driver was working for. Also sued was the driver of the truck, Steven Helinsky, 39, of Wilmer, Texas. The Kansas Highway Patrol said that on the morning of the accident, Helinsky found himself traveling south in the northbound lanes, and that the collision occurred as he was trying to make a U-turn.

This is another example of a poorly trained driver behind the wheel of a killer big rig. If you see a trucker driving carelessly, use your cell phone to call the local police on 9-11.

Rapper Critical After Jersey City Car Crash

According to the Jersey Journal, rapper Cassidy remains in critical condition at the Jersey City Medical Cente after a traffic crash caused a fractured skull and several fractured facial bones.

The Philadelphia rapper reportedly was passing through Jersey City on his way to New York to continue work on his third album, slated for release later this year.

$20 Million Car Accident Ruling Upheld

It is about time that victims of car accidents received a good ruling from Superior Court. A Pennsylvania woman who was struck by a car as she flagged traffic will be receive a $20 million award as upheld by the PA Superior Court. The driver of the vehicle raised multiple issues, all of which were rejected by the court. The woman is a single mother of three and suffered several broken bones and a permanent cognitive deficiency from the accident. This according to the Times Leader

Family of Cyclist Killed in Accident to Get $2.5 Million

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the family of a female cyclist who was struck by a vehicle will receive a $2.5 million settlement from the motorist's insurance carrier. The family's attorney believed the settlement to be "unusually high" considering the cyclist was 25 with no dependents. The family will use the settlement to establish a memorial scholarship at the University of Utah where she was a second-year graduate student at the time of her death.

This is a reminder that when biking, always wear a helmut and be aware of your surroundings.

4 Dead, 4 Injured in NJ Turnpike Auto Accident

In anothe example of out of control killer trucks on our roads, four people were killed and four others were hospitalized last Monday in a six-vehicle crash that closed a portion of the New Jersey Turnpike.

According to the AP, the accident on the roadway's northbound express lanes was caused when a truck hauling bricks was unable to stop as it approached slowed traffic, state police said. The truck rammed one car and turned over onto another and pushed both cars into another tractor trailer.

Charges are pending against the driver of the truck.

10 Hurt As Out of Control SUV Plows Into N.Y. Market

A SUV driven by an 89-year-old man plowed into pedestrians and vendors at an open-air public market, injuring 10 people.

According to the Associated Press:

Police said Bernard Newmark was looking for a specific vendor at the Rochester Public Market when his foot slipped off the brake pedal and hit the accelerator, sending the vehicle through at least eight food stalls and into a shed.

A total of eight workers and shoppers went to hospitals, two with serious injuries, police said.
