Beware of Increase Risk Due to Some Birth Control

Public watchdog Public Citizen hs petitioned the FDA to ban all third generation oral contraceptives containing the incredient desogestrel because it nearly doubles the risk of life threatening blodd clots when compared to the older forms of the pill.

"The FDA must ensure the well-being and safety of women in the U.S. and ban third-generation oral contraceptives containing desogestrel," the petition says. "Women should discuss with their doctors alternative methods of birth control, such as the second-generation oral contraceptives, and how to safely switch contraceptive methods."

According to Public Citizen, banning the pills could save hundreds of women a year from developing venous thrombosis, or blood clots, which have disabling and sometimes fatal consequences. Venous thrombosis typically appears in a patient's legs, but also can occur in the abdomen, arms, veins of the brain and superficial veins. Blood clots are particularly dangerous because they can travel through the veins and block blood flow at another location, causing a condition known as venous thromboembolism. Blood clots that travel to the lungs can cause pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal.

The Pills containing desogestrel are:

Desogestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol
Desogen
Velivet
Kariva
Mircette
Apri-28
Ortho-Cept
Reclipsen
Cyclessa

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ricky Bagolie

Contaminated Peanut Butter Leads to Illness, Lawsuits

Throw away your peanut butter says the FDA. The warning is based on a new study released on February 13, 2007 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local health agencies. It connects 288 cases of food borne illness in 39 states to consumption of certain types of Peter Pan peanut butter. Most infections are in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri but there are victims in many other states. The first illness from the current peanut butter epidemic may have come in August 2006. As a result of broad epidemiological testing and recent case control studies, the CDC was recently able to identify Peter Pan peanut butter as the likely cause of illness. Lawsuits on behalf of those stricken with a food borne illness have already been filed.

Peanut Butter Recalled
ConAgra is in the process of recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 that were already distributed. The FDA has sent investigators to ConAgra's processing plant in Sylvester, Georgia to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for Salmonella Tennessee.

Salmonellosis Symptoms

    * Fever
* Headache
* Diarrhea
* Abdominal Cramping
* Vomiting and Nausea
* Dehydration

In individuals with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can enter the bloodstream from the intestines and cause life-threatening infections. This infection can sometimes be treated with antibiotics. Individuals who have recently eaten Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter and have experienced any adverse symptoms should contact a physician.

If you or a loved recently ate Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter and and got sick as a result contact us at InjuryBoard by calling 1-800-593-5446. We can help so give us a call now for a confidential and free consultation.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ricky Bagolie

Lawsuits Filed in Peanut Butter Recall

On Feb 14, the Food and Drug Administration warned consumers not to eat any Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in jars bearing product code 2111, which came from a ConAgra plant in Georgia. All products with that code, purchased since May 2006, have been recalled for fears that they contain salmonella, a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhea, cramps, vomiting, fever and chills. Most people who get salmonella recover within a week or 10 days although severe cases involving hospitalization or death are not uncommon.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officially says that nearly 300 people in 39 states, including four people in Washington, have been sickened since August. Not all cases have been linked to contaminated peanut butter. The CDC has attributed no deaths to the outbreak.
Donn Moyer, spokesman for the state Department of Health, said cases aren't officially counted until epidemiologists have verified that a person had the implicated strain of salmonella -- in this case, Salmonella Tennessee.

Individuals who have gotten sick should seek medical attention, save the jar of peanut butter for testing and contact an attorney for a free and no risk consultation.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ricky Bagolie

Beware Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patches

Bard Composix Mesh Patch has been recalled. The mesh patch was used to repair ventral hernias caused by thinning or stretching of scar tissue that forms after surgery. The patch was placed behind the hernia defect through a small incision. The patch was then held open by a "memory recoil ring" that allowed the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open and lay flat. This memory recoil ring can break under the stess of placement. This then can lead to bowel perforations and/or chronic intestinal fistulae.

On January 10, 2007, the FDA recalled the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch because, when inserted the patch can break, leading to loose mesh going into the bowel - causing bowel perforations, abdominal pain, and requiring necessary bowel dissection surgery to remove the failed patch. The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch is manufactured by Davol Inc., a division of C.R. Bard located in Cranston, Rhode Island. The FDA first issued a Class I Recall of the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch on December 22, 2005. A Class I recall is the strongest recall available to the FDA, reserved for medical devices that are potentially life-threatening or could cause a serious risk to a patient's health. Shortly after the first recall, an updated recall was issued on March 31, 2006, that included additional Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch sizes and lot numbers.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Ricky Bagolie
